Drive In

Gaggles of pajama wearing kids packed into station wagons and truck beds for late nights of popcorn and movies. Couples on dates steaming up windows. Vintage concession stand promotional reels with hot dogs doing back flips, ice cream cups marching in a row, and dancing fountain sodas.

In their heyday there were some 4,000 or so drive in theaters in the US. More than 90% of those are now shuttered, but our collective memories of them live on. The few that remain, including the Wellfleet Drive In and the Leicester Triple, offer a novel and nostalgic summer night at the movies.
